Some recycled stuff from the mists of time today - sorry it's not something more original, but I realised I have a fair amount of stuff from previous websites that's now not online, and I can roll some of it out as weblog entries when I'm stuck for a subject. Yeah, lazy is me.
Let's talk about Double Dactyls.
A couple of years ago, Andrew brought these written peculiarities to my attention for the first time. A double dactyl is a short, rhyming poem, composed to a set of strict rules. They're not nearly as easy to write as, say, limericks, because there are so many rules of rhythm and form to obey, as well as the requirement for it to make sense or be funny. Consequently, trying to write one is a really satisfying challenge. I encourage you to check out the first couple of paragraphs of the first link in this entry before you read further, so that you're familiar with the definition of a double dactyl (there are loads of examples there, also).
My first attempt at writing a double dactyl of my own was not strictly valid, because a real double dactyl has a six-syllable word somewhere in the second stanza (told you it was difficult). But it fulfilled the other criteria, so it was close:

Racer elite.
Some say he utilised
Banned midiclorians.
Quite inexcusable.
Dastardly cheat!
Then, after much labour, I wrote my first real double dactyl.

I haven't tried to write another one since, but if someday I have a spare day or ten, I might have another go.
